What are people’s biggest concerns when they come to you for a discrimination case?

Most people are concerned that they are making too much out of their issue when coming to our firm and that a lawsuit will draw even more attention to them. Most people see this as a barrier and would rather just go about their day-to-day lives. However, if rights are being violated attention needs to be drawn to the situation and we do provide counseling and support for people that need it during this difficult time.

They are concerned that they are making a mountain out of a molehill. They don’t want to draw attention to whatever their protected characteristic is. For example, it they’re a Seventh-Day Adventist, they don’t want to draw attention to the fact that they are that. They’re just quietly trying to observe their religion. They feel like if they start a lawsuit then it’s just going to amplify what they are, who they are, even more.

What we do is we try to tell them, “You have to embrace the inevitable. It’s part of this process. If you need any type of support to help you deal with those fears or what you think is coming down the road, we’ll certainly provide all the support, but we can’t not make it happen. It is going to come down one way or another.”
